ASX-listed Clean TeQ Water has secured a $12.5mn contract from Rincon Mining, a Rio Tinto subsidiary, for the Rincon lithium project in Argentina's Salta province, marking the company's entry into South America's Lithium Triangle. The three-year contract covers engineering design, procurement, and supply of a lithium concentrate softening plant utilising Clean TeQ's proprietary CLEAN-IX Moving Bed Ion Exchange (MBIX) technology, which reduces lithium loss and freshwater consumption during refining processes. 'This contract is one of our largest and is our first in the South American lithium triangle,' Clean TeQ CEO Peter Voigt said in a press release. 'The award is a strong endorsement of our MBIX technology as a best-in-class solution for, in this case, lithium refining.' Rio Tinto announced earlier this year its intention to intensify focus on lithium extraction in South America's Lithium Triangle, backing this strategy with a $2.5bn investment in the Rincon project. The mining giant views the region as strategically critical for securing lithium supplies essential to the global energy transition.
