The new terminal building and supporting facilities at Tobago International Airport, constructed by CRCC, has recently earned the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Pioneer Award from the U.S. Green Building Council. The project has also earned LEED v4.0 Silver certification for both new construction and interior design. This globally recognized certification system confirms that the project meets international standards for sustainable design, construction, and operations, positioning it as a model for environmentally-conscious airport development across the Caribbean.
Spanning 268,000 square meters with 25,800 square meters of building space, the new terminal is designed to handle 3 million passengers annually. From the outset, the project team prioritized sustainability by establishing a dedicated green building implementation team and incorporating environmental considerations into every phase of development. The terminal features hollow laminated glass curtain walls and distinctive wave-pattern metal roofing that enhance thermal and acoustic insulation while improving energy efficiency. Natural lighting illuminates 82% of interior spaces, while smart management systems ensure equipment operates at over 75% efficiency, resulting in overall energy savings of 17.4%.
Construction practices emphasized comprehensive environmental stewardship. The project implemented waste sorting and recycling programs, repurposed topsoil for landscaping to minimize waste disposal, and utilized high-efficiency HVAC systems alongside low-emission construction equipment. Water conservation was prioritized through the installation of certified water-saving fixtures, effectively reducing both energy consumption and carbon emissions.
During the system integration and testing phase, the project went beyond standard commissioning procedures by engaging third-party experts to validate and optimize energy performance across air conditioning, lighting, plumbing, and building management systems. Rigorous testing of indoor air quality and water standards ensured all facilities meet stringent green operation requirements.
The successful completion of Tobago's new terminal demonstrates Chinese companies' commitment to sustainable development and responsible construction practices in international markets. Once fully operational, the facility will significantly ease inter-island transportation challenges, enhance travel convenience for residents, and boost local tourism and economic growth, establishing itself as a landmark of green, smart, and modern infrastructure in the Caribbean region.
