Key takeaways
- Meg O’Neill, BP’s CEO, is prioritising disciplined capital allocation to restore shareholder confidence.
- A streamlined structure with two divisions increases operational agility in times of geopolitical turmoil.
- Current shortages on the market provide a financial buffer to address ongoing business challenges.
Looking back on her first 100 days as leader, Meg O’Neill, CEO of BP, stressed the need to refine the company’s decision-making framework in order to rebuild confidence among shareholders. In an update on LinkedIn, O’Neill highlighted a more disciplined approach to capital allocation, stating that the company must prioritise high-quality investments over a large number of projects to safeguard accountability and the company’s reliability.
A leaner corporate structure
To increase operational flexibility, O’Neill has reorganised the business into two main divisions – upstream and downstream – using the trading arm as a bridge to optimise value.
This leaner structure has already proved effective in managing the volatility caused by tensions between the US and Iran. In particular, thanks to the synergy between the refining and shipping divisions, BP was able to move quickly, enabling the transport of millions of litres of US diesel to Australia and ramping up aviation fuel production at a plant in Spain.
Market advantages and future outlook
Industry experts suggest that the current geopolitical climate, marked by supply shortages and rising crude oil prices, is providing a financial tailwind that could help O’Neill tackle the company’s ongoing challenges.
No long-term roadmap yet
Although she recently reviewed the leadership and reporting lines to reinforce the company’s commitment to oil and gas, she has not yet introduced a new long-term roadmap that goes beyond the existing strategy running until 2027.
Strikingly, in her reflections on the company’s progress she made no mention of former chair Albert Manifold, who was removed from his position in May.
