Canadian mining company Aton Resources is set to begin its first commercial gold production at the Abu Marawat concession in Egypt’s Eastern Desert during Q2 2026, Economy Plus reported on October 14, citing a statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The move was announced by the company’s CEO, Tonno Vaco, during a meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, on the sidelines of the London Energy Forum.
Badawi held a series of bilateral meetings with senior officials from European financial institutions and mining companies to explore investment and technical collaboration opportunities. Among these was a meeting with a high-level delegation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where discussions focused on expanding strategic partnerships.
The potential collaboration in the mining sector includes technical support in energy efficiency and carbon reduction, as well as cooperation in sustainable aviation fuel, electric vehicles, and methane emission reduction projects.
Badawi met with Maximo Pacheco, CEO of Chile’s national copper
company, Codelco, to explore potential cooperation between the
Egyptian mining sector and the Chilean company. The minister
invited Codelco to explore investment opportunities in copper
mining in Egypt’s Eastern Desert and proposed sending a technical
team to Egypt to coordinate with the Egyptian Mineral Resources
Authority and local mining industries, according to Economy
Plus.
Egypt has a long-standing tradition of gold mining, with operations
concentrated mainly in the Eastern Desert and the Nubian
Shield.
