BYD starts Brazil car production

China’s BYD Auto has started production at its new passenger car plant in Camaçari, Bahia state, fifteen months after construction began, the company confirmed this week in a press release. The site, which cost BRL5.5bn ( $1bn ), is planned to produce up to 150,000 battery and hybrid vehicles annually and aims to support 20,000 jobs through local supply chains and direct employment. “From breaking ground to the first car rolling off the production line, it has only taken us 15 months,” said Stella Li , BYD’s executive vice president. “This achievement heralds a new chapter for BYD and sustainable transportation in Latin America.” The first model produced will be the Seagull, marketed locally as the Dolphin Mini, which BYD says leads Brazil’s electric car segment with 34,000 units sold. The Song Pro and Chaser 05 are due to follow in coming weeks. Alexandre Baldy , head of BYD Auto Brasil’s sales, stated: “We are transforming Camaçari into a powerhouse for the future.
