Bilfinger : Takes On Leading Role in Modernization of Critical Waterway Infrastructure in the Netherlands

The international industrial services provider Bilfinger has taken on a leading role in the modernization of critical Dutch waterway infrastructure such as movable bridges, locks, and water management systems. As part of the Orion consortium, the company was contracted by Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, to update all Electrical, Installation & Control (EI&C) systems including advanced automation solutions. The consortium's overall modernization scope is valued at around € 140 Mio. and spans an 8.5-year period. The strategic goal of Rijkswaterstaat's "Tilburg 3" project, carried out by the consortium from 2024 to 2032, is to make the vital water infrastructure in North Brabant and Central Limburg future-proof amid the challenges posed by climate change and fluctuating water levels, while increasing efficiency by further bundling and centralizing traffic operations in the Control Center in Tilburg. "The canal system in the south of The Netherlands is important for our economy and the water management of our country. Maintaining it is therefore indispensable," says Teun Ruijters, Project Director Rijkswaterstaat. "The cooperation of Istimewa Elektro, as part of Bilfinger, Mourik Infra and Yunex Traffic make those three the ideal partners for us because of the large task we have to tackle." "We have been delivering maintenance and upgrades to Rijkswaterstaat since 2019. Within this consortium, Bilfinger is responsible for all EI&C engineering and installation services, representing approximately 55% of the total scope. This includes the update to state-of-the-art cameras, motors, steering panels, automated safety protocols and operating software to manage all waterways fully remotely - reducing manual interventions and enhancing safety.
