Australian mining company First Au Ltd has kicked off a maiden 3,000-metre diamond drilling programme at its Nimba Gold Project in northern Liberia, reports Share Café News.
The development marks a significant push into one of West Africa’s most geologically promising gold regions.
The programme, announced July 14, is being undertaken in partnership with Hong Kong-based contractor Hit N Drill Ltd (HND), which has deployed two diamond rigs to the site. Under the terms of the strategic agreement, First Au will receive full ownership of one of the drill rigs at no extra cost upon the programme’s completion - a move the company says secures long-term exploration capability in the region.
Located within an 831 km² exploration licence in Nimba County, the project lies within the ancient Archean West African Craton - a geologic structure that has yielded multiple world-class gold deposits. The area also borders Côte d’Ivoire’s Ity Gold Mine, one of the region’s major operations, situated less than 25 kilometres away.
The drilling will test structural controls beneath historic gold intersections, as well as newly identified oxide and sulphide zones and the extensions of artisanal gold workings. The region is marked by extensive informal mining, which underscores its mineral potential.
FAU Chairman Daniel Raihani said that the exploration campaign will
focus on high-priority targets that could transform the company’s
future.
In addition to its Liberian project, First Au continues exploration at its Victorian Goldfields Project in East Gippsland and the wholly owned Gimlet Gold Project near Kalgoorlie, Australia.
The Nimba programme is FAU’s first drilling venture in Liberia, reflecting growing investor interest in untapped West African gold terrains.
