New York, May 6 (EFE).- Tech giant Apple has agreed to pay 250 million dollars to resolve a class-action lawsuit in the United States that accused the company of deceptive advertising for exaggerating the Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities of its iPhone 15 and 16 devices.
The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco federal court, alleged that the Cupertino, California-based company created a false impression regarding the immediate availability and effectiveness of Apple Intelligence, the company's AI system.
According to the plaintiffs, the company's marketing led consumers to purchase new devices under the promise of a cutting-edge, AI-powered version of Siri which, in practice, did not materialize within the announced timelines.
Compensation for users
The settlement, which still requires preliminary approval from a judge, provides compensation for US customers who purchased iPhone 16 models or iPhone 15 Pro versions between Jun. 10, 2024, and Mar. 29, 2025.
Eligible customers could receive between 25 and 95 dollars per device, depending on the total volume of claims filed.
Specialized media outlets estimate that the agreement covers approximately 37 million devices sold in the US territory.
Apple denies wrongdoing Despite the substantial payout, which is shaping up to be one of the largest out-of-court settlements in the firm's history, Apple has not admitted any legal wrongdoing. The company maintains that since the launch of Apple Intelligence, it has introduced "dozens of features," such as Live Translations and Visual Intelligence.
In recent years, Apple has lagged in the generative AI race, particularly compared to devices from Google and Samsung.
The company presented Apple Intelligence at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but many of the most advanced features, designed for Siri to compete with tools like ChatGPT, have suffered delays.
This settlement is made public weeks before Apple's annual developer conference, scheduled for Jun. 8, where the company is expected to finally present the definitive update to its virtual assistant. EFE
