ANDRITZ selected for modernization of Râul Mare Retezat hydropower plant in Romania
2026/09/17
International technology group ANDRITZ will supply the complete electromechanical equipment for the comprehensive refurbishment of SPEEH Hidroelectrica's Râul Mare Retezat hydropower plant in Romania.

ANDRITZ is part of a consortium led by COBRA Instalaciones for this project, which will support Romania's renewable energy supply and strengthen the national power grid.

The order value for ANDRITZ is in the high double-digit million-euro range and is included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026.

With an installed capacity of 335 MW, the Râul Mare Retezat plant has so far been operating at only approximately 200 MW due to limitations of the existing equipment. The modernization will increase the installed capacity by about 12% to 376 MW and make the full capacity available for use. It will ensure reliable, high-performance operation that meets the flexibility requirements of the energy market.

"This modernization will turn Râul Mare Retezat into a reliable pillar of renewable electricity supply in western Romania, improve system services for the national power grid, and strengthen Romania's energy security," says Iulius-Dan Plaveti, CEO of SPEEH Hidroelectrica.

Hidroelectrica is the leader in electricity production in Romania and the main provider of system services required by the National Power System, making it a vital company for a strategic sector with direct implications for national security.

ANDRITZ's scope comprises the design, manufacture, and supply of the electromechanical equipment, including two 188-MW high head Francis turbines, generators, as well as automation and auxiliary systems. The equipment will be installed under ANDRITZ's supervision. The project is expected to be completed by 2031.
