I write a series of newsletters about metals and mining, And I'm excited today to have an opportunity for a short conversation [00:18] Speaker 1: with Minister Raj Pillai. I mean, you have a lot of titles. You're the deputy premier of [00:24] Speaker 1: Yukon. You are the minister of economic development. And importantly, for this context, you are the energy the minister of energy, mines and resources. So, 1st of all, thank you for taking a moment to have a conversation. [00:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks Gwen. I appreciate it. Love the work that you do [00:38] Speaker 2: and what you do for the mineral industry. [00:41] Speaker 2: And happy to be here today on the traditional territory of the Kwame Ndun 1st Nation and the Tonkwetchin Council in Whitehorse and having an opportunity to share a little bit about the Yukon story with you. Fantastic. [00:53] Speaker 1: Let's start with, I actually recently heard a stat that jumped out at me about Yukon. It's jumped out because it was anomalous across the country, which is that Yukon actually posted positive GDP growth in 2020, despite, well, it being the year that it was. [01:09] Speaker 1: And it doesn't take a lot of digging to realize that mining played a pretty important role in that. Can you just talk a little bit about how that came to be, and I guess just the role of mining in the region as a way of setting the stage? [01:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
