New roadmap to guide investments to uphold grid reliability, empower customers to save amid evolving changes in energy and achieve Illinois’ clean energy and economic development goals
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ComEd today announced the launch of the new Long-Range Strategy (LRS) outlining how the company will prepare the power grid in northern Illinois to meet growing energy demand, maintain affordability, uphold nation-leading reliability, and advance the state’s clean energy and economic goals for decades to come.
The LRS is a roadmap to position customers and communities for a strong energy future amid rapid shifts facing the industry – from expanded data center and AI adoption, to increasing electrification, severe weather and accelerating supply challenges which create upward pressure on customers. Building on more than a century of service and innovation, the LRS outlines key priorities and will guide future investments to deliver value for more than 9 million people served in the region.
“Illinois is at the forefront of a national transformation in energy,” said Gil Quiniones, president and CEO of ComEd. “The same grid that powered homes and businesses through the last century must now support data centers, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing, while keeping energy affordable and reliable for our customers. ComEd’s Long-Range Strategy is our roadmap to build a smarter, more flexible and equitable grid that will meet the evolving needs of our customers today and for years to come.”
The LRS reflects the diverse needs of more than 9 million people served from across the region – with customers and communities served ranging from rural farmland to bustling urban centers and thriving suburban neighborhoods, as well as key industries and thousands of businesses operating across ComEd’s northern Illinois service territory.
A Roadmap Built Around Three Priorities: People, Power, and Progress
The plan identifies key impact areas that will remain central to ComEd’s future investments and ongoing work:
Meeting the Moment for Illinois’ Energy Future
ComEd’s LRS aligns with Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) and supports the recently passed Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGAA). The strategy will also inform the second multi-year grid plan that ComEd plans to submit to the Illinois Commerce Commission in January 2026, ensuring reliability, affordability, and equity remain at the center of future infrastructure decisions.
ComEd has already made substantial progress toward this vision:
