Slide 6: This fifth webinar covers the MDT-Expert
This fifth webinar will cover the MDT-Expert discharge temperature control system. In the next few slides you’ll learn what it looks like. You’ll see how it works. You’ll get a taste of what it can do. And what it can’t do. Then you’ll hear what we can make it do that it doesn’t. 6
Slide 7: The MDT-Expert remote panel (BACview)
Pictured is the MDT-Expert remote panel. It’s made by Automated Logic and is called a BACview. As you can see, the BACview has a 4 line, 40 character liquid crystal display and an array of buttons. 7
Slide 8: MDT-Expert used on non-recirculating units
The MDT-Expert is used on all Applied Air direct and indirect fired non-recirculating units. It is the basic control system for all IFL units. We’ll discuss the controls for recirulating units in the next webinar. 8
Slide 9: BACview as a service tool
The BACview comes with a cord so it can be plugged into the local access port of any AdaptAire control module which makes it an excellent service tool. An MDT control system can be commissioned and serviced without a BACview, but upgrading to an MDT-Expert, which includes the BACview, will make comm
Slide 10: Hard wiring the BACview to the control module
The BACview can also be hard wired directly to the control module via a 4 conductor shielded cable run between the BACview connector plug and the RNET communication port on the control module. 10
Slide 11: Mounting the BACview up to 500 feet away
When hard wired, the BACview can be mounted up to 500’ from the unit where it will typically be mounted on a 2 gang electrical box. This requires removing the 4 cover mounting screws and the 4 stand offs. The back plate can then be fastened to the 2 gang box and the cover replaced. 11
Slide 12: The standby screen
Once the BACview is connected to the control module, the BACview will display the standby screen. This screen gives a general description of the unit as well as the current time, date and discharge air temperature. 12
Slide 13: The Home screen and link buttons
Pressing any button navigates to the Home screen. Applied Air contact information is displayed here. Look closely on the right side of the display and you’ll see a small arrow pointing down. This indicates there is more information that isn’t currently displayed on the screen. Pressing the DOWN navi
Slide 14: Accessing screens with link buttons and Hot Keys
To access other screens within the MDT-Expert menu, such as the Alarm screen, the user can drill down through the menu using the link buttons. Other screens can also be accessed using Hot Keys. Hot Keys are activated by pressing and holding the FN button and the pressing any numbered button. Each nu
Slide 15: Password protection of the BACview
As I mentioned, the BACview can be mounted up to 500’ from the unit and is often mounted in an area accessible to many people. To prevent tampering with setpoints and other operational parameters the BACview is password protected. A user can LOGIN and enter the password. The default password is 0000
Slide 16: Quick recap of what we've learned
Let’s take a quick break from learning new things and go over what we’ve learned so far. First, the MDT-Expert control system does modulating discharge temperature control. You know the MDT-Expert user interface is called the BACview. You know the BACview is a keypad display that can be mounted up t
Slide 17: Recap: screens, buttons and passwords
You saw the standby screen shows the unit description, time, date, and current discharge air temperature while the Home screen displays Applied Air contact information. I talked about the various buttons and how they can be used to navigate through the screen menus. Finally, you learned the editable
Slide 18: Unit modes: Off, Manual, Auto
After entering the password the user can access any editable screen. The MDT-Expert system allows the unit to be started and stopped from the BACview through the Unit Modes screen. There are three unit modes of operation. The unit is stopped when it is in the OFF mode. In the MANUAL mode the fan run
Slide 19: Factory default setpoints and valid ranges
All units are shipped with factory default setpoints. Where possible, these setpoints are standardized from program to program. For example all control programs have a default heating economizer setpoint of 65°F. The default setpoints were chosen for several reasons including industry acceptance, pr
Slide 20: Discharge air temperature control with 5 setpoints
The MDT-Expert system, as you would expect, controls the discharge air temperature and uses 5 setpoints to do soso. I’ve I ve used a simulation program to expand the display to view all of the setpoints at once. I’ve also added some plausible numbers for setpoints to demonstrate the temperature cont
Slide 21: Freeze protection
Just like all of the AdaptAire control systems, the MDT-Expert also provides freeze protection. If the discharge air temperature falls below the freeze stat setpoint for 3 continuous minutes, the fan will shut off. In the example shown here the setpoint is 40°. The default setpoint is 45 °. 21
Slide 22: Energy savings functions
The MDT-Expert has 2 energy savings functions that can save the customer money when heating and cooling are not required. These two modes disable the heating when the outside air temperature is above Heating Economizer setpoint and disable the cooling when the outside air temperature is below the Co
Slide 23: Fault control and alarms
Another function the MDT-Expert performs is fault control. The control module monitors all of the inputs and outputs. Should something function erroneously, the control module will take the appropriate action to insure the safe operation of the unit. An alarm light and audible alarm on the BACview w
Slide 24: Unit status screen
The MDT-Expert unit status screen gives the user a single place to observe the unit operation. With a glance the user can determine the fan and burner status and see which cooling stages are operating. The user can also check the outside air and discharge air temperatures The screen also let’s the u
Slide 25: Clearing alarms and resetting counters
In the last to slides we discussed alarms and counters. Alarms can be manually cleared in one of two ways. They can be reset by a power interruption at the unit or using the BACview. The alarm, cycle, and runtime counters can also be reset from the unit reset screen. The user need only turn the rese
Slide 26: Time of day scheduling
The MDT-Expert control system provides time of day scheduling. The user can program up to 4 different daily schedules, 12 different holiday schedules and 2 override schedules. The daily schedules are ones that occur everyday. The holiday schedules are for specific dates and times and override the da
Slide 27: 24 hour operation scheduling
When 24 hour operation is desired, the user must choose the days for 24 hour operation. This allows the user to specify exactly which days the unit is to operate continually. For example a business may want to operate only 5 days per week with 24 hour operation but not Saturday or Sunday. The operat
Slide 28: User Configured Output feature
A unique feature of the MDT-Expert control is the User Configured Output. This control feature allows the system to take a 0-5VDC input signal and control a 0-10VDC output. The output is controlled around a user setpoint by a BACview selectable reverse or direct acting PID control. The control opera
Slide 29: Example of the User Configured Output
Let’s look at an example of how this feature works. Again, I’ve used a simulation program to expand the display to view all of the setpoints at once once. I’ve I ve also added some plausible numbers for setpoints to demonstrate the functionality of this control feature. Suppose the user wishes to co
