Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and from MHA indicate a striking increase in the prevalence of mental health conditions in the U.S., including a more than 4-fold increase in symptoms of depression compared to prior to the COVID-19 pandemic: The prevalence of depression symptoms increased from 6.5% in 2019 to a high of 30.2% of U.S. adults in December 2020 [1,2];The prevalence of anxiety symptoms increased from 8.1% in 2019 to a high of 36.9% of U.S. adults in December 2020 [1,2];Of the nearly 3 million people who took an MHA mental health screening during the past 12 months, approximately 1 million were experiencing depression, and hundreds of thousands more were experiencing either anxiety or psychosis [3]; andPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. reported living with a mental health condition, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder [4]. Research shows that estimate has grown to at least 2 in 5 adults [5].
