Slide 8: How to get to DDI
Now let’s talk about how to gget to DDI. If yyou do not alreadyy have it bookmarked, you can get to DDI a couple of different ways. You can start from the OpenNet splash page: opennet.salliemae.com as you see in the top left. On that page, you would select the DocumentDirect link to go to DDI. You c
Slide 9: Login page
So let’s look at the login g p page. g As yyou pprobablyy know already, y there are currently two levels of login for DDI. The log‐in page you see displayed here is for your Sallie Mae user ID and password. This is the same user ID you would use to log into OpenNet. As you can see on the right, ther
Slide 10: ED Reporting – Schools folder
Once yyou gget logged gg in, you y will see the page p g displayed p y here. We are ggoingg to use the ED Reporting – Schools folder for our discussion today. When you click on that “folder” you will be prompted with the second level login. 10
Slide 11: Second level login
This is where yyou enter yyour DDI user ID – or recipient p ID ‐ and p password. These may or may not be the same as your Sallie Mae user ID and password. Slide 12: Topic and Report display
Once yyou login g in, you y will see Topic p and Report p display p y within the folder. There is nothing under Topic right now so we are going to click on Report. 12
Slide 13: List of available reports
Once yyou do that, the list of reports p for which yyou have access will display p y as you see here. These are all of the report that Mark described earlier. As he said, some of these are automatically available to all users while others are available upon request. If you want access to one of thes
Slide 14: Report dates available

Slide 15: Selecting school code
When yyou select the date of the report p youy want to view, you y will see the list of school codes you have access to view. You may only have access to view a report for one school code. If that is the case, it will be the only school code displayed. 15
Slide 16: Viewing the report
If yyou double click on the school code, the report p will appear pp in the right g side of the window as you can see here. 16
Slide 17: Finding data in the report
So now that you have got the report, let’s talk about some of the things you can do in it. First, let’s go over how you can find data in the report. This is particularly useful if you are looking for information on a specific student. Depending on your browser, there may be two ways you can access t
Slide 18: Filter by line feature
Another feature that yyou might g not be as familiar with is the filter byy line feature. You can access this by clicking on the funnel looking icon displayed here. In this case, you can search with a little more complexity if necessary. Due to the way these reports are structured, you may only need
Slide 19: Filter results
The lines that contain the data yyou searched for will displayp y at the bottom of the page as you see here. You can see what section of the report the data is in as well as the page number. From here, you can print or even export your filter results using the second and third icons respectively. If
Slide 20: Printing a report
Now let’s look at how to p print a report. p Again, g you y mayy have two options p for printing a document. Depending on your browser, you may be able to use control P to launch the print dialogue box. The print icon you see under the blue arrow here will always work. When the print box pops up, th
Slide 21: Now printing window
Once yyou click on p print, you y will see the now p printingg window, which shows you what is being printed. 21
Slide 22: Downloading a report
Now let’s talk about downloading a report. Some of you might have been trained how to export reports using the data definition table. Since most of these reports have too many fields for the export function, we are going to talk about how to download the reports. The steps are different but the resu
Slide 23: File download window
When yyou select that, you y will get g a new file download window like you y see here. You should opt to save the file. This will launch the “save as” box and you can rename the file and save it in whatever folder you want on your computer and the file is downloaded. 23
Slide 24: Opening the file in Excel
Now that yyou have it downloaded, let’s look at how to getg the data into Excel. There are a couple of ways you could do this. We are going to start in Excel and choose to open a file. When the open box pops up, change your files of type to All files. Since we saved the file from DDI as a txt file,
Slide 25: Locating the saved file
Once yyou change g the type yp to all files, you y should be able to locate the file yyou saved in the appropriate folder. Here I named it ddi report 031711. So, I will select that and hit enter or click Open. 25
Slide 26: Text Import Wizard step 1
When yyou click Open, p yyou should gget the Text Import p Wizard. If you y don’t, don’t worry, you can use the text to columns tool in the data menu in Excel to launch it. In the text import wizard, the original data type will default to fixed width. For the delinquency files we are reviewing, we w
Slide 27: Text Import Wizard step 2
In step p two, we are ggoingg to define the delimiter. These files are p pipe p delimited. So, click the check box for Other and in the field to the right of other, enter the pipe – which is shift‐backslash (above enter and under backspace on your key board). Then click next to go to the last step.
Slide 28: Text Import Wizard step 3
In step p 3, you y can define the format for the columns if yyou like. We do suggest gg that you skip the import for the first column since that is not part of the data. To do that, click on the first column under data preview like you see here and then click do not import column (skip) in the colum
Slide 29: Data displayed in Excel
You can see how the data initiallyy displays p y in Excel here. We won’t go g into detail about how you can manipulate the data in Excel but did want to share just one quick shortcut so you can quickly format the file. 29
Slide 30: Resizing columns
To resize all the columns to fit the data, select the entire sheet byy clickingg on the box between the 1 and the A. 30
Slide 31: Auto-fit columns and save as Excel
Then double click the end of anyy of the column headers like the white line yyou see between A and B here. That will resize all of the columns to fit the data within those columns. One other note, when you are ready to save your file, make sure that you choose to save it as an Excel file type. When
Slide 32: Closing a report
Goingg back over to DDI, yyou can close the report p youy are in byy usingg the expand/collapse feature and clicking on the minus sign next to the report name. This will make it really easy to access any of the reports below that one in the list. 32
Slide 33: Downloading a PDF
So let’s sayy instead of downloadingg the report p for use in Excel, yyou want to download a file as a PDF. That is easy enough to do and we will look at that with the new portfolio summary report, since this is one that you probably do not need to have in Excel. So once again, you will select the d
Slide 34: Download as PDF options
This time, we will change g “download as” to PDF. This is an examplep of a report p where you might only want the current page since all of the data appears on the one page. However, if you have access to view the report for multiple schools, you might still prefer to change “pages” to all. We are g
Slide 35: Opening the PDF report
When you do open the report report, it will display much like it does here. here You can opt to save the file just like any other file and you are ready to use it. 35
Slide 36: DDI landing page and resources
The last thingg I want to cover before we open p the lines up p for q questions is what I call the DDI landing page and we recommend that you bookmark this page for quick and easy reference. This is the page that you will see before you get to the login page if you use either of the links we talked
