[{"type":"text","content":"\n\n\nTarget Light-Duty Vehicles and Medium-Duty Buses in India\n\n\n\n\n\nVANCOUVER, Feb. 12, 2014 /CNW/ - Westport Innovations (TSX:WPT /\n NASDAQ:WPRT), engineering the world's most advanced natural gas engines\n and vehicles, and Tata Motors Limited, India's largest automobile\n company, today launched a new spark-ignited (SI) natural gas 3.8L\n turbocharged engine featuring the Westport WP580 Engine Management\n System (EMS). Designed to support many engine configurations, the\n Westport WP580 EMS is also scheduled to be applied to Tata's 5.7L\n engine targeting medium-duty applications in late 2014.\n\n\n\"By combining our unique technology and Tata's leadership in India's\n commercial vehicles market, we are able to introduce new natural gas\n products and target the mainstream transportation markets in one of the\n world's fastest growing markets for natural gas vehicles,\" said Thomas\n Rippon, Executive Vice President of Westport. \"The Westport WP580\n offers breakthrough price, performance, and flexibility for OEMs\n allowing them to use this advanced technology even in cost-effective\n markets such as China and India.\"\n\n\n\"India has one of the largest natural gas light-duty vehicle fleets in\n the world, and we see an enormous opportunity for natural gas trucks\n and buses with the development of fueling infrastructure,\" said\n Rajendra Petkar, Head Power Systems Engineering, ERC of Tata Motors.\n \"By expanding our portfolio of natural gas engines, we are focused on\n increasing our market share of the natural gas vehicle and engine\n market.\"\n\n\nThe US Energy Information Administration (EIA) indicates that India is\n the fourth largest energy consumer in the world. Vehicles are the\n country's second-largest consumer of energy (18%) after industry (42%),\n according to Thomson Reuters Foundation, and rising vehicle numbers and\n fuel prices have implications both for India's economy and its energy\n security. Westport believes that the adoption of natural gas as a\n transportation fuel will help reduce India's dependence on petroleum to\n meet the country's energy demand and improve local air quality\n challenges.
