In an age where inclusion and diversity are many times overshadowed by the need for familiarity and uniformity, OKTV, a wholly owned subsidiary of Valiant Eagle Inc. (OTC:PSRU), will soon air Harlem Tigerman.
It could appear to be ominous when the pursuit of a dream is not in accordance with our traditional sense. Antoine Yates of Harlem is a testament to such a perspective. As a boy, his fascination coupled with his skill in handling animals was unwavering. Nothing in life could ever compare to the self actualization of working with and studying animals. It would therefore seem to be obvious that he would pursue a career in the animal world. He read thousands of books related to animal biology and psychology in spite of no formal schooling which made his knowledge rival that of experts. Sadly, after countless attempts to gain employment at various zoo facilities, shelters and, veterinarians which proved fruitless, Antoine decided to pursue his dream unlike anyone could possibly imagine.
Antoine would ultimately begin raising wild animals in his 6th floor apartment in Harlem. He successfully raised lions, tigers, alligators, snakes and other animals in the comfort of his home. No one knew the extent of his passion nestled behind his walls. To most, his fanciful obsession was recklessly careless. However, to think of the challenges and discipline required to care for and domesticate some of the fiercest animals alive, it is quite evident that no matter how odd the undertaking, Antoine’s abilities are second to none.
Unlike the many countless owners of large and dangerous cats, Antoine never put anyone in harms way. His pets remained in the confinement of his 6th floor Harlem apartment.
However, speculation throughout the city was rampant. He became known as the Harlem Tigerman. Produced by Providence Film Group, another Valiant Eagle Inc. (OTC:PSRU) subsidiary, Harlem Tigerman is a startling account of a man who refused to allow society to discourage his quest. It premiered at the 2006 Hollywood Black Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA., and then, it was subsequently screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Xavier “X” Mitchell (Fathers of the Sport, Laugh at LA, Next UP, Opportunity Knocks), Harlem Tigerman is a short documentary film that examines the story of Antoine Yates. Young Antoine earned the moniker, “Harlem Tigerman”, after a four-year-old, 450 pound Siberian tiger named Ming was discovered residing with him in his 6th floor Harlem apartment, along with a six-foot alligator named Al. Yates was catapulted into the media spotlight in October 2003 when NYPD officers repelled down a Harlem apartment building to tranquilize Ming.
After an inadvertent bite, Antoine faced an exhaustive uphill battle with the courts for his freedom, life possessions, and the return of his tiger. The documentary exposes his life, as he discusses his experience in raising an adult tiger and other wild animals in a Harlem apartment. Furthermore, the film will reveal his arduous court battle with the State of NY, leading to his incarceration. It was learned after countless county officials made routine inspections on his apartment that there were never any reports of a tiger being present in his residence, although the tiger had lived there for years.
Xavier Mitchell, Producer, director, and president of Providence Film Group, says, “I feel it’s important that Antoine is not recognized for harboring exotic animals, but that he dared to transcend a stereotypical mentality that many black youth fall prey to because of a negative media portrayal imprisoning them in a closed mindset. He followed his passion, which was to raise wild animals with both love and respect. He is the true Tiger King.” Mitchell was mentored by Penny Marshall and worked with her on The Rucker, Fathers of the Sport, and various other projects.
A deep fascination with big cat ownership is rampant in the US. According to the Guardian, there are about 5,000 big cats in America. Sadly, most of these animals are often abandoned once they grow beyond the ability of the owner to manage and afford. It’s a startling phenomenon.
Mitchell says, “I’ve recently spoken to Antoine, and he’s just as filled with fervor to be with animals as ever before.” Providence is currently in development on other projects associated with the story. The soundtrack for the project features songs by Franchise X Entertainment artists like Belle Aire, Notcho, and Lavelle.
The first single off the soundtrack, “I am Tigerman” by Belle Aire, has already exceeded 15,000 downloads and over 20,000 views on youtube. (link https://youtu.be/r9rxLa96bLs). The entire soundtrack will be released in July.
With the surging popularity of Netflix’s Tiger King, the story of Antoine Yates should not be minimized or forgotten. It is a stark reminder of how the world isn’t necessarily fair at all times, especially for African Americans, but opportunities are sometimes created when you stretch outside of the standardized views society has shaped for us.
