Dr. Despanie began his biomedical career at LSU investigating molecular therapies such as oncolytic virotherapy and antiviral gene silencing before joining Johns Hopkins Hospital to probe how defective protein trafficking contributes to cystic fibrosis.His dissertation, “Tubulin-based fusion proteins as multifunctional tools”, detailing a novel class of chemotherapy nanomedicines to combat triple-negative breast cancers (an aggressive disease subtype for which there are currently no targeted treatments) received over $178,000 in NIH grant funding.In 2014, Dr. Despanie also founded S-aima Biopharmaceutics LLC, a biotech startup which sought to develop an artificial blood nanomedicine for temporary blood replacement on the battlefield and during civilian emergencies.
