The national survey also revealed that gift cards are\n popular, with survey respondents preferring to receive gift cards as\n often as the traditional Valentine's Day gift of candy or chocolates.\n\n\nThe online survey, conducted by Shoppers Drug Mart in January 2013,\n asked Canadians who are married, common law or dating about their\n Valentine's Day wish list and shopping habits. The results indicate\n that Canadians are feeling generous -- and romantic -- for Valentine's\n Day this year. A majority of respondents (90%) indicated they will be\n purchasing a gift for their spouse or date, while one in three did not\n purchase a Valentine's Day gift the previous year. More than half of\n those who plan to purchase a gift this year say they will opt for a\n 'romantic dinner at a restaurant' or 'date night with dinner and a\n movie'.\n\n\nThe survey also asked Canadians what's on their gift wish list this\n Valentine's Day. While romantic dinners and date nights were the most\n popular choices (51% of respondents), 11% said they prefer to receive a\n gift card, almost on par with sweet treats like chocolates and candy\n (12%).\n\n\n\"Our survey indicates that retail gift cards have secured their place on\n the wish lists of Canadians, and not just for Christmas,\" says Tammy\n Smitham, Vice President, Communications & Corporate Affairs, Shoppers\n Drug Mart. \"A gift card can take the stress out trying to find the\n perfect Valentine's Day gift, and the wide selection at Shoppers Drug\n Mart includes restaurant gift cards, which was the number one gift card\n preference in our national survey.\" After restaurants, gift cards from\n Shoppers Drug Mart and Tim Horton's rounded out the top three picks\n from those respondents who said they want to receive a gift card.\n\n\nWhen it comes to gift shopping, the survey showed that most people tend\n to wait rather than plan in advance. Of those who purchased a gift for\n their special someone last year, a majority (54%) said they waited\n until a few days before or until Valentine's Day itself.
