EVERETT, WA, and RICHMOND HILL, ON, June 1 /CNW/ - SAMSys Technologies
Inc. (TSX:SMY), of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, has joined Intermec
Technologies Corp.'s Rapid Start RFID intellectual property licensing program,
the companies announced today. The 90-day Rapid Start Licensing Program, which
opens today, provides SAMSys full access to one of four RFID IP portfolios,
the Fixed RFID Reader and Fixed RFID Printer Portfolio. The agreement allows
SAMSys to manufacture products with the RFID capabilities and functionality
that today's end-users require. SAMSys joins Intermec RFID licensees Philips
Semiconductor BV, Sharp Corp., Sensormatic and TransCore.
SAMSys, founded in 1995, is a world-leading provider of RFID hardware
systems, designing and manufacturing a wide range of RFID readers that support
a broad array of tag protocols and frequencies. SAMSys also offers RFID
consulting services for companies contemplating the introduction of RFID into
their operations. In addition to producing RFID reader hardware, SAMSys offers
a family of products to simplify the installation and integration of
application solutions and ensure the ongoing performance of the overall RFID
hardware infrastructure.
"We are extremely gratified to have reached agreement with Intermec on
the licensing of its Fixed Reader intellectual property portfolio," said Cliff
Horwitz, SAMSys chairman and CEO. "We believe that it is imperative for the
RFID industry to recognize the existence of intellectual property developed
over many years, evolving to its current state-of-the-art status and improving
to a point where it meets the necessary functionality standard for widespread
adoption."
"It is equally important that we, the vendor community, are able to
remove yet another element of uncertainty from our customers and to supply
them with product which is fully licensed. Surely this is one significant step
in further facilitating the accelerated adoption of this wonderful technology.
We are proud to have demonstrated a level of leadership in this regard," said
Horwitz.
Horwitz continued, "Lastly, the agreement we have executed with Intermec
is a Cross-Licensing Agreement whereby Intermec recognizes the value of our
Intellectual Property portfolio, which we believe is essential for the
optimization of the desired levels of functionality. We are delighted that the
value we have created has been recognized and incorporated in order to further
enhance our respective products."
"End-user customers want to be sure they have access to the full power of
RFID, which is available only by using Intermec's patented inventions," said
Intermec President Tom Miller. "As a participant in Intermec's Rapid Start
Licensing Program, SAMSys has once again proved itself to be a leader in the
introduction of this powerful, new supply chain technology. SAMSys is now able
to use our intellectual property to provide its customers the best possible
RFID systems."
Intermec, a UNOVA Inc. (NYSE:UNA) company, holds more than 145 RFID
patents covering broad areas of UHF supply chain RFID practice and
applications. Its patents cover all standards and classes related to the
international practice of RFID, including Class 0, Class 0+, Class 1, UHF
Generation 2, ISO and others. The company's Rapid Start Licensing Program,
available only through Aug. 31, is designed to open access to Intermec's
current and future RFID technology innovations and to clearly indicate which
manufacturers and vendors are licensed to use Intermec's patented RFID
technologies. After the close of the program, only those patents required to
practice recognized standards will be available for license, at higher rates
than available through Rapid Start.
"Since intellectual property owned by Intermec and left out of the
royalty-free EPCglobal Gen 2 standard includes key supply chain RFID
functionality, the majority of suppliers need to license Intermec's IP in
order to provide full Gen 2 implementations," said Chantal Polsonetti, vice
president, ARC Advisory Group.
