The most\nimportant Fairplay vein is a prominent\n \n \n north-trending, 50-degree east-dipping mylonite zone emplaced\nin\n \n \n deformed slate, argillite, chert, phyllite,\nquartzite, schist, and\n \n \n gneiss, and contained\ndiorite sills, of the Paleozoic Calaveras\n \n \n Complex. Motion on the mylonite, a strong post-tectonic\nstrike-slip fault zone several 10 metres thick, is right-lateral.\nMovement\n \n \n on the non-planar fault zone resulted\nin zones of compression at restraining bends, expressed as\n \n \n stacked imbricate (en echelon) splay faults containing\ncomplex\n \n \n gold-bearing quartz veins. These\nsecondary splay veins are detached from\n \n \n the main\nthrough-going mylonite zone and pervade for up to 150 metres\n \n \n into the host rocks of the Calaveras Complex. They\npreferentially\n \n \n follow a pre-existing\nnorthwest-trending steeply northeast-dipping\n \n \n late axial planar foliation in the country rocks. Hanging\nwall and footwall splay veins of this type create the well\n \n \n -known\n \n \n elongate east-plunging plumes or\nshoots of high-grade gold\n \n \n mineralization\nresponsible for most of the production from historical\n \n \n underground mining at Providence.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n It is important to note that drill hole PR1...
