Proteome Sciences plc (\"Proteome Sciences\") is pleased to\nannounce a licence agreement with one of the top 10 global leaders in clinical\ndiagnostics to use its biomarkers for the detection, diagnosis and monitoring\nof stroke. This is a new area for the licencee who has determined not to\ndisclose its identity at this time for competitive reasons. The biomarkers were\ndiscovered and validated using a combination of different proteomic approaches\navailable for external use through the proprietary ProteoSHOP® platform.\n\nStroke is the brain equivalent of a heart attack. Blood must flow in and\nthrough the brain for it to function. If its flow is obstructed by a blood clot\nmoving to the brain or by narrowing or blocking of blood vessels, the brain\nloses its energy supply, causing damage to tissues leading to stroke.\n\nAnnually, 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke. Of these, 5.5 million\ndie and another 5 million are left permanently disabled, placing a burden on\nfamily and community.\n\nStroke is the third leading cause of death in the US (160,000 deaths) with\nannual costs of $57.9bn for stroke-medical related costs and disability and the\nsingle most common cause of severe disability. 750,000 people are diagnosed in\nthe US annually having new or recent strokes.\n\nUnder the research licence, a number of Proteome Sciences biomarkers will be\ntested in stroke for inclusion on a new panel for the licencee's\nhigh-throughput diagnostic platforms.
