[{"type":"text","content":"\n\n\n\nCompany Executives Offer "Crystal Ball" Predictions\n\n\nExperts Discuss Need for New Approaches in Anti-Infectives\n\n\nEMERYVILLE, CALIF., November 20 /CNW/ - Two NovaBay Pharmaceuticals, Inc.\n(AMEX & TSX: NBY)(http://www.novabaypharma.com) executives, Chairman and CEO\nRon Najafi, Ph.D., and VP of Research, Nafsika Georgopapadakou, Ph.D., shared\ntheir expert opinions in PharmaVOICE's "Crystal Ball" feature in the\nmagazine's November/December issue.\n\n\nDr. Georgopapadakou highlighted "Five Anti-Infective Trends" that will\nimpact the pharmaceutical industry for the next fives years, including:\n\n\n-- Increased Frequency of Microbial Multi-Resistance to Commonly Used\nAntibiotics\n\n\nAccording to Dr. Georgopapadakou, this is already happening with\nmulti-resistant Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Dr.\nGeorgopapadakou says that this increased frequency is also increasing with\nantivirals, such as antiretrovirals for HIV.\n\n\n-- Rapid Dissemination of "Exotic," Often Opportunistic, Pathogens\n\n\nDr. Georgopapadakou reports that we are already seeing outbreaks of\nClostridium difficile, A. baumannii, West Nile Virus (WNV), and Chikungunya\nvirus. For many of these diseases, there is no effective treatment, and\nnothing in sight.\n\n\n-- Continued Paucity of New Antibiotic Classes\n\n\nAccording to Dr. Georgopapadakou, this continued paucity might have\nprecipitated the exit of big pharma from infectious disease drug development.\nBiotech has proved unable to produce new antibiotic classes that are not\nsubject to cross-resistance.\n\n\n-- Increased Emphasis on Infection Control and Prophylaxis\n\n\nDr. Georgopapadakou cites the finding that almost one hundred thousand\npatients die of healthcare-associated infections in the U.S. each year.\nBecause of this there is an increasing emphasis on rigorous control measures.\nDr. Georgopapadakou predicts that the wide use of invasive procedures and\ndevices is likely to give prophylaxis equal footing to therapy.\n\n\n-- Emergence of Topical, Non-Antibiotic Anti-Infectives\n\n\nAccording to Dr. Georgopapadakou, the trend toward topical\nanti-infectives for vulnerable sites (eyes, nose, sinuses, ears, urinary\nbladder, surgical sites, central venues catheter sites) is already happening.\nThis trend is fueled by ...
