[{"type":"text","content":"\n\n\n\nCreating National Showcase for County-Wide Broadband Wireless Access\n\n\nTAIPEI, Taiwan, Dec. 5 /CNW/ - A new Mobile WiMAX network in the\nnortheastern county of Yilan, built by Chunghwa Telecom in association with\nNortel(x) (NYSE/TSX: NT) and eASPNet, is to become the first fully integrated\nbroadband wireless network driven by a local government under the\nMobile-Taiwan (M-Taiwan) project.\n\n\nRadically impacting the daily lives of Yilan residents, visitors and\nbusinesses - and positioning the district as a national showcase for\nubiquitous wireless broadband services - the WiMAX infrastructure will enable\nbroadband wireless access to such services as M-Learning, M-Commerce, M-Tour\nas well as video surveillance and IPTV services.\n\n\n\"This initiative demonstrates the significance of Mobile WiMAX technology\nin advancing the government's rapidly evolving M-Taiwan project,\" said\nChun-Ming Hsieh, vice president, Chunghwa Telecom. \"Nortel is an established\nleader in Taiwan's telecommunications industry and we look forward to working\ntogether in extending the same integrated wireless capabilities to other areas\nof Taiwan to help bolster the competitiveness of local economies.\"\n\n\n\"The people of Yilan will now be able to take the Internet with them\nwherever they go, and enjoy high-speed mobile access using virtually any\nwireless-enabled device,\" said Jackson Wu, president, Greater China, Nortel.\n\"This is a momentous step forward for the M-Taiwan project.\"\n\n\nNortel is providing Chunghwa Telecom with next generation Mobile WiMAX\nbase stations, based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, incorporating Nortel's\npatented MIMO antenna technology. Nortel's MIMO is a key capability enabling\nthe provision of the most demanding real-time applications such as VoIP and\nvoice over WiMAX.\n\n\nNortel will also provide an Access Service Network Gateway, customer\npremises equipment, and network management capabilities, as well as network\nintegration and optimization services provided by Nortel Global Services.\nNortel ranked number one in the global markets for service provider\nsoftswitches and gateways for the first half of 2006, according to Synergy\nResearch Group.
