[{"type":"text","content":"\n Evolutec Group PLC\n23 January 2006\n\n\n\nFor immediate release 23 January 2006\n\n\n EVOLUTEC GROUP PLC\n\n ('Evolutec' or 'Company')\n\n POSITIVE PRECLINICAL RESULT FOR rEV576\n IN ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (HEART ATTACK)\n\nEvolutec Group plc (AIM: EVC), the biopharmaceutical company developing novel\nproducts for the treatment of allergic, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, is\npleased to announce a positive result for its preclinical development candidate\nrEV576 in acute myocardial infarction ('AMI'). In the trial, rEV576\nsignificantly reduced damage to heart tissue (>25%) with good effect even at low\ndoses.\n\nIn AMI, heart muscle is damaged following coronary thrombosis and the objective\nof therapy is to reduce this damage. The approved thrombolytics re-establish\nblood flow following heart attack but do not address the damage to heart tissue.\nThere are approximately one million cases of AMI per annum in the US making this\na substantial market opportunity with unmet need.\n\nrEV576 is a potent complement C5 inhibitor, an exciting new class of drugs that\ntarget the complement system. Over-activation of complement is implicated in a\nrange of acute and chronic conditions including AMI, transplant rejection and\ndamage to joint surfaces in rheumatoid arthritis.\n\nMark Carnegie Brown, Evolutec's Chief Executive Officer, commented: 'rEV576 has\nalready generated considerable scientific interest and this result emphasises\nits potential in acute cardiovascular indications such as AMI, stroke and\ncardiopulmonary bypass. The result adds to the promising efficacy seen with\nrEV576 in an acute preclinical model of the auto-immune disease myasthenia\ngravis and underlines the potential of Evolutec's pipeline.'\n\n\n\n ENDS\n\n\n\n\nFor further information:\n\nEvolutec 0118 922 4480\n\nMark Carnegie Brown, Chief Executive Officer\nNicholas Badman, Chief Financial Officer\nwww.evolutec.co.uk\n\nBridgewell Securities 020 7003 3000\nShaun Dobson/Xavier de Mol\n\nBuchanan Communications 020 7466 5000\nMark Court/Tim Anderson/Mary-Jane Johnson\n\n\n\n\nNotes for Editors:\n\n\nAbout the complement system and rEV576's mechanism of action\n\nThe complement system is an essential part of the body's natural defence\nmechanism against foreign invasion. It is also involved in the inflammatory\nprocess. It comprises around 20...
