(TSXV: MDX) today\nannounced the publication of positive results from a study of low-level laser\ntherapy (LLLT) for healing acute and chronic wounds combined with the\nExtendicare Wound Prevention and Management Program. Although the study was\ncompleted a number of years ago, these positive results are just being\npresented formally, and for the first time are appearing in the peer-reviewed\njournal, International Wound Journal. The nine-week study evaluated the effect\nof low-level laser therapy on wound healing in 16 patients at a Canadian\nExtendicare nursing home. At the end of the study, 61.9 percent of the wounds\nachieved significant improvement ((greater than) 50 percent wound closure) and\n42.8 percent had 100 percent closure. None of the wounds deteriorated during\nthe study and no negative consequences of treatment were encountered. In\naddition, a retrospective review of the data revealed an estimated total cost\nsavings of $220 per month per patient in labor and supplies.\n\n\n"We are very pleased with the positive research results of our low-level\nlaser system in wound care," said Steve Guillen B.Sc., M.B.A., President and\nDirector, MedX Health. "Pressure ulcers and chronic wounds are a common and\ncostly problem in nursing home settings. MedX has a long history of offering\ninnovative laser and light therapy products that have successfully treated\npain, sports injuries and other conditions and we believe our products can\noffer patients with acute and chronic wounds a non-invasive, drug free\nsolution."\n\n\nChronic wounds can be painful and debilitating for patients and the care\nand management of these wounds can have significant economic consequences. The\nstudy results demonstrate that MedX's low-level laser system was very easy to\nlearn and use and offered relief for frail and elderly patients who suffered\nfrom acute and chronic wounds.\n\n\nThe study results indicated similar wound closure rates were achieved for\nboth chronic and acute wounds, suggesting LLLT may play an important role in\nenhancing wound healing regardless of chronicity. In addition, previous\nresearch has demonstrated LLLT increases microcirculation...
