TORONTO, June 29 /CNW/ - On today's edition of Canada's Business Report,
host Robert Graham speaks with the head of a Canadian company that has formed
a joint venture in China to help that country's reforestation efforts.
Graham speaks with Dave Clarke, President and CEO of Maple Leaf
Reforestation Incorporated, which is aiming to build 48 greenhouses in Inner
Mongolia, China, and grow 500 million tree seedlings that will be planted in
an effort to stop the spread of deserts and reclaim the land. Clarke says
construction of the first greenhouse will start very soon. It will be able to
produce 12 million seedlings a year.
Clarke says the Chinese are turning to his company for help because it
has the technology and know-how to produce "sturdier...stronger seedlings" and
grow them "much quicker." Clarke says when the seedlings are planted "farmers
will be paid to baby sit the seedlings and water them."
