(TSX Venture: MBI) is\npleased to announce that it has entered the development and validation phase\nfor its Cardiovascular Disease Profiling System(TM). As part of the validation\nphase, MBI will continue to identify the genes, or \"biomarkers\", which mark\nthe presence of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease accounts for\nthe death of more Canadians and Americans than any other disease, killing each\nyear approximately 75,000 Canadians (Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation) and\n480,000 Americans (American Heart Association).\nMBI is also pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement\nwith the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (OHI), the clinical and\ncontract research arm of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Under the\nagreement, MBI and OHI will conduct a joint pilot project to develop and\nvalidate the genetic biomarkers in respect of cardiovascular disease. The\nspecific terms of the agreement are confidential.\nThe University of Ottawa Heart Institute was founded in 1976 has become\nan international centre of excellence for the diagnosis, treatment,\nrehabilitation and prevention of cardiovascular disease through patient care,\nresearch and education.\nDr. Robert Roberts, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief\nScientific Officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, stated \"We are\npleased to undertake this joint pilot project with Med BioGene. The analysis\nof gene expression represents a paradigm shift from the traditional\nsingle-molecule approach to the evaluation of gene regulatory networks and it\nis important to understand its implications for, and uses in, cardiology.\"\nErinn B. Broshko, Chief Executive Officer of MBI, stated \"We are excited\nto enter this phase as we aggressively develop the genetic signature for\npeople suffering from cardiovascular disease. In addition to using these\nbiomarkers as an accurate and rapid diagnostic tool that relies entirely on a\nblood test, there is an increasing consensus in the medical community that\neffective biomarkers can be utilized to unlock innovation in therapeutic\ndevelopment and treatment. With a robust set of qualified biomarkers in\nrespect of cardiovascular disease, the safety of new therapeutics will be\nincreased, products will get to patients in ...
