Conrad Black notes that the western world has allowed itself to become dependent on China as a source of strategic minerals. He also describes the opportunities available for Canada to develop its rich endowment of numerous strategic and critical minerals and for Canada to become an integral part of the global supply chain for many products, with Canada's potential participation ranging from mineral extraction through intermediate processing to advanced manufacturing. He observes that the Ring of Fire has one of the greatest potential concentrations of precious and special metals in the world, including chromite, a mineral which is essential to the production of stainless steel, the production of which is currently dominated by China, noting that the only current sources of chromite in the world are in distant unreliable countries.
