[{"type":"text","content":"Kane Biotech’s Coactiv+â„¢ Technology Could Address a Pricey and Painful Problem: Lack of Healing in Chronic Wounds Due to Microbial Biofilm Formation\n \n \n (NewsDirect)\n \n \n \n By Richard Dal Monte\n \n \n \n Chronic wounds are a\npersistent and pricey problem for patients and health care systems\naround the world.\n \n \n \n Defined\nas\n \n “wounds that fail to proceed through the normal phases of\nwound healing in an orderly and timely manner,” chronic wounds range\nfrom severe burns to bedsores to diabetic ulcers.\n \n \n Whatever the cause,\nthey all carry costs in medical care as well as pain and decreased\nquality of life, and many can be attributed to something you may have\nnever heard of: biofilms.\n \n \n “Biofilms are formed when bacteria and/or fungi\nadhere to surfaces and excrete a glue-like substance that acts as an\nanchor and provides protection from the environment,” making\n“bacteria up to 1,000 times more resistant to antibiotics,\nantimicrobial agents, disinfectants and the host immune system,”\naccording to\n \n Kane Biotech Inc.\n \n (TSX-V: KNE | OTCQB: KNBIF).\n \n \n The Canadian company’s latest product,\ncoactiv+\n \n ™\n \n Antimicrobial Hydrogel, is designed to address\nbiofilms and the problems they cause in chronic wounds — and at a\nprice that will allow it to be covered by Medicare in the U.S. as well\nas insurers around the globe, a crucial distinction for a premium\nproduct.\n \n \n “The\nthings we normally used very effectively to kill bacteria — like\nantibiotics, our own immune cells, our antibodies — they frequently\nare ineffective in killing these biofilm bacteria,” explains Dr.\nGregory Schultz, a University of Florida professor emeritus and Kane\nBiotech’s chief scientific officer.\n \n \n Schultz says Kane’s coactiv+\n \n ™\n \n technology not only addresses biofilm-impaired healing, but it also\ncontains an antimicrobial molecule that allows it to be effective in\nhealing chronic wounds.
