Sent to the Senate's Agriculture Committee, SB1264 \"would remove industrial hemp from the state's Cannabis Control Act and establish a licensure system for farmers through the Illinois Department of Agriculture,\" according to a recent article published on Chicago Tonight. Senator Linda Holmes, who resides on the committee, said Illinois is first an agricultural state and believes SB1264 \"seems like a great opportunity to expand.\"\n While the state had a law go into effect in 2015 allowing state institutions with 4-year agriculture degree programs to research hemp, the Illinois Department of Agriculture has not received any applications for licenses.
