The\nstudy was to determine the specific response to oral administration\nof Erlotinib, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor,\nin a plucked hair preclinical model. The data itself is impressive\nand endorses the utility of the plucked hair model.\n\nIn addition to tracking the gene expression and molecular pathway\nchange through the preclinical and clinical development of a drug,\nthe Erlotinib results open up the possibility for clinicians to\nmonitor patient specific gene responses to treatment, enabling an\nearly indication that the treatment will be successful. As this\ndiagnostic procedure is minimally invasive, patients will be able to\nundergo frequent testing to confirm that the targeted gene expression\nchanges are correlating with the oncology treatment protocol being\nused therefore predictive of a successful outcome.\n\nThe results presented support the thesis that the plucked hair\nbiomarker platform provides a simple, minimally invasive means of\nmonitoring the specific response of epithelial tissue to oncology\nagents targeted to discrete signaling pathways. This data has been\ngenerated using the established oncology agent, Erlotinib, which is\nused widely to treat advanced non small cell lung cancer and in\ncombination for pancreatic cancer. It is also being researched for\nother indications.
