Sign-off on the EIA, which documents\nall aspects of the Rosia Montana mining project from construction through\noperations and closure and reclamation, marks the first-ever EIA process\nundertaken in Romania after the approval of the European Union Directive on\nthe management of mine waste from extractive industries. The Rosia Montana\nEIA team is comprised of more than 100 independent experts, from 10 countries\nincluding Romania.\n\"This is a critical milestone in the process of developing Rosia\nMontana,\" said Alan R. Hill, CEO of Gabriel Resources. \"I thank everyone on\nthe EIA team for such a thorough and professional analysis of our project, and\nfor the timely completion of a report of this scope.\"\n\"The EIA for this challenging project has been a real iterative process\nbetween our independent team and the project designers,\" said Marilena\nPatrascu, leader of the EIA team and environmental policy expert, \"resulting\nin a proposal that is compliant with both Romanian and EU law. Our task now is\nto communicate the development of Rosia Montana to Romanian authorities and to\nthe Romanian public.\" \"While the end-process has taken a few weeks longer than\nplanned,\" said Fergus Anckorn, deputy leader of the EIA team and Technical\nDirector of Amec Earth & Environmental consultancy, UK, \"it's given time for\nproductive cross-checking between the chapter teams that has strengthened the\noverall product.\"\nWith some sections written in English and others in Romanian, the final\nportions of the 5,000 page document are now being translated into Romanian as\nrequired by Romanian law - and also into English, in compliance with the Espoo\nConvention (Hungary having been the only country to raise issues for EIA\nconsideration under the Espoo process). The Non-Technical Summary of the EIA\nwill be voluntarily translated into Hungarian as well. Given the need for\ntechnical precision in the translation, the EIA team estimates that certified\ntranslations will be completed within a few weeks.
