[{"type":"text","content":"\n\n\n\nTORONTO, Dec. 15 /CNW/ - Dr. Gene Shelp, President and CEO of ENPAR\nTechnologies Inc. ("ENPAR"), is pleased to announce that the company has been\ngranted a European Patent for the electrochemical treatment of water\ncontaminated with nitrogenous compounds including nitrate. Previously, patents\nfor this technology were granted in the United States (2000) and Canada\n(2006).\n\n\nThe patented system complements conventional technologies for treating\nwater, such as ion exchange and reverse osmosis, which produce solutions\ncontaining very high levels of nitrate. ENPAR's system converts nitrate\ndirectly into benign nitrogen gas, resulting in improved water recovery and\nenabling the recycling of ion exchange brine.\n\n\nNitrate is a highly mobile, long-lived contaminant of ground and surface\nwaters worldwide. The accumulation of nitrate in the environment results\nmainly from:\n\n\n- non-point source runoff from land due to the over-application of\n fertilizer nitrogen or sewage sludge;\n- point-sources such as livestock feed operations, municipal waste\n water treatment systems, and septic systems\n- industrial sites such as certain chemical, paper or munitions\n manufacturing, and mining operations; and,\n- burning of fossil fuels in power plants and vehicles.\n\n\nChronic consumption of high levels of nitrate represents a serious health\nthreat. Nitrate poisoning, for example, is associated with "blue baby\nsyndrome" and other health problems such as cancer in humans, as well as\nreduced vitality and increased stillbirth, low birth weight, and slow weight\ngain and even death of animals.\n\n\nThe granting of this patent reaffirms ENPAR's commitment to the on-going\ndevelopment of state-of-the-art technologies to address emerging water quality\nissues globally.\n\n\nENPAR is a "Technology Company" applying its patented and proprietary\n"Electrochemical Technologies" to the treatment of waste water and drinking\nwater contaminated by metals or nutrients i.e., nitrate/ammonia associated\nwith the mining, metal processing, chemical, agricultural, municipal and waste\nmanagement sectors.
