GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, July 18 /CNW/ - Caribbean Utilities
Company, Ltd. ("CUC" or "the Company") confirmed today that it was not
impacted by Hurricane Emily ("Emily"), a major category four hurricane that
brushed Grand Cayman on July 17, 2005. Emily's closest point of approach was
98 miles southwest of Grand Cayman at 4 am Cayman time, resulting in maximum
sustained winds of 43 miles per hour and minimal storm surge along the south
coast.
Richard Hew, CUC President and Chief Executive Officer (Designate), noted
that the Company did not shut down its power system at any time during Emily's
passing. "We did experience three line faults Saturday night that caused the
disruption of service to approximately 100 customers in the Tropical Gardens,
Spotts-Newlands and East End areas. Service was restored to these customers on
Sunday, July 17, 2005, around noon, after it became safe for employees to
commence repairs. Otherwise, I am happy to report that our generating capacity
and transmission and distribution grid were unaffected by Emily. Obviously, we
are very grateful that the Cayman Islands were spared by this dangerous
hurricane."
CUC is the sole provider of electricity to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
and operates under a 25-year exclusive Licence renewable in 2011 with the
Government of the Cayman Islands.
