[{"type":"text","content":"\n\n\n\nLAVAL, QC, June 21 /CNW Telbec/ - Neurochem Inc. (NASDAQ: NRMX; TSX: NRM)\nannounces that it has received a third recommendation from the European Data\nSafety Monitoring Board (DSMB) to continue its ongoing European Phase III\nclinical trial for tramiprosate (ALZHEMED(TM)), Neurochem's investigational\nproduct candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).\n\n\nThe DSMB is made up of independent clinical experts who monitor and\nevaluate the safety of patients taking part in the tramiprosate (ALZHEMED(TM))\nPhase III clinical trial. In Europe, this third recommendation by the DSMB\nmembers was based on their recent review of the available safety data from\n747 patients who have been on study medication for an average of 5.7 months.\n\n\nNeurochem is progressing with its multicenter, randomized, double-blind,\nplacebo-controlled, three-armed and parallel-designed, 18-month Phase III\nclinical trial for tramiprosate (ALZHEMED(TM)) in Europe. This clinical trial\nwas initiated in September 2005. More than 950 mild-to-moderate AD patients at\nclose to 70 sites across ten European countries are already enrolled in this\nclinical trial. The recruitment will continue at least until after top-line\nresults of the North American study are released. With respect to the\ncompleted Phase III North American clinical trial for tramiprosate\n(ALZHEMED(TM)), Neurochem received during the course of the clinical trial\nfive recommendations from the North American DSMB to continue the study.\n\n\nTramiprosate (ALZHEMED(TM)) is a small, orally-administered molecule\nknown as an amyloid (B) antagonist, which crosses the blood-brain-barrier,\nbinds to soluble A(B) peptide and interferes with the amyloid cascade that is\nassociated with amyloid deposition and the toxic effects of A(B) peptide in\nthe brain.\n\n\nAbout Alzheimer's Disease\n\n\nAD is a leading cause of death in older people. The disease is\ncharacterized by the progressive death of nerve cells in the brain, making it\ndifficult for the brain's signals to be transmitted properly. A person with AD\nexperiences problems with memory, judgment, thinking, and eventually with\nmotor functions, all of which make it difficult for the person to participate\nin daily activities.\n\n\nAccording to the U.S. Alzheimer Association (2007), there are now more\nthan five million people...
