CATHARINES, ON, Nov. 12, 2013 /CNW/ - Algoma Central Corporation (Algoma) has been advised today that the\n Commercial Court in London England, rejected the request made by\n Jiangxi Jiangzhou Union Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. seeking leave to appeal\n the Arbitration Tribunal decision regarding a shipbuilding contract\n dispute involving Algoma Tankers International Inc., a wholly owned\n subsidiary of Algoma.\n\n\n\"We are extremely pleased that the Court rejected the shipyard's request\n and confirmed that the decision of the Arbitration Tribunal would\n stand\", said Greg Wight, President and CEO of Algoma. \"We will\n reactivate the collection process that we began following the\n Arbitration Tribunal decision, and we fully expect that the collection\n of our deposits will proceed smoothly from this point.\"\n\n\nIn 2007, Algoma, through its wholly owned subsidiary, entered into\n contracts to build three 16,500 - deadweight ton product tankers in\n China. Each contract contained provisions that permitted cancellation\n under certain conditions. These conditions were met in 2010 and Algoma\n accordingly issued notices of rescission to the shipyard seeking to\n cancel the contracts, and demanding reimbursement of the instalments\n that had been advanced. The matter was taken to arbitration by the\n shipyard and hearings were conducted before the Tribunal in London in\n September, 2012.
