Not far from Merced, was a very well-known area where the legendary 49’ers discovered vast amounts of gold which started the great migration to the west in the 1800s. There were many well-known mines in the historic geological area in northern California referred to as the “Gold Belt”. “The Red Cloud” was one of the largest producers in the area. Over 677,192 thousand ounces of gold were mined from 1885 to 1973 worth $13,543,840 when gold was valued at only $20 and $35 an ounce.
