ARIUS Receives Patent Protection for Lead Antibody

Company Expands Intellectual Property Portfolio

TSX Venture Exchange: ARI

TORONTO, Oct. 11 /CNW/ - ARIUS Research Inc. (TSX-VE: ARI) announced
today that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent
and Trademark Office for a patent on its lead antibody, AR7BD-33-11A,
targeting CD63. The patent is an important addition to the ARIUS intellectual
property portfolio that underlies ongoing business development and licensing
activities. This allowance covers the antibody molecule, various uses of the
antibody, its derivatives, and a method for using it, and other similar
antibodies, to treat cancers such as prostate and breast cancer. ARIUS has
several additional patent applications pending that will continue to enhance
the value of this important antibody asset.
AR7BD-33-11A was generated through ARIUS' proprietary FunctionFIRST(TM)
product platform. A series of anti-CD63 antibodies was produced over several
years by using human cancer tissue samples as a source of cancer targets, and
screening the resulting antibodies for their ability to kill cancer cells.
ARIUS has shown that antibodies directed against the CD63 target have a
significant impact on cancer. The AR7BD-33-11A lead antibody in the CD63
program has a broad spectrum of activity in animal models of human pancreatic
cancer and melanoma as well as in breast and prostate cancers. The program has
a number of antibodies with similar activity. Due to its potency, and other
desirable characteristics, AR7BD-33-11A was selected as a lead antibody and
humanized to make it suitable for human clinical trials.
"Patents are crucial to a biotechnology company. They embody the value of
the work we do and are one of the main reasons that other companies want to do
business with us," commented Dr. David S. Young, President and Chief
Scientific Officer of ARIUS. "We are working on obtaining partners for CD63
and other families of antibodies to help move them into clinical testing.
Eventually we want our products to have a significant impact on patient
outcomes in the same way other targeted therapies for cancer already have."

About ARIUS Research

ARIUS Research Inc. is a biotechnology company dedicated to personalizing
cancer therapy through the discovery and development of novel anticancer
monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). Established in 1999, ARIUS has built a
proprietary technology platform, FunctionFIRST(TM), that rapidly identifies
powerful MAbs targeting a variety of cancer indications. This antibody
generation engine has enabled ARIUS to assemble a growing pipeline of over 300
functional MAbs, which may be used for commercial collaborations,
out-licensing or in-house development. ARIUS has ongoing licensing and
research partnerships with key biotechnology and drug development companies
that provide revenues and access to external technologies. The long-term
vision of ARIUS is to deliver personalized therapy by matching multiple
antibodies to the distinct antigenic characteristics of each patient's tumour
cells thereby increasing efficacy and avoiding side effects.
