APT's principal business focus is to create and develop Broadband over Power Line (BPL) and Power Line Communications (PLC) friendly devices, products, and services. Power lines run to practically every building and within each building, usually to many points in each room. PLC allows devices to communicate over the existing power lines, while BPL uses power lines as a broadband internet connection.\r\n\r\nDSL and cable modem, the other popular broadband service technologies, were already classified as information services. The FCC's decision allows BPL to compete with these other technologies where they exist without imposing costly extra regulations on BPL. DSL and cable modem are widely available in the United States in large-to-medium sized population centers, but that still leaves large portions of the country underserved. DSL has strict distance limitations, and there are many areas where cable modem is not an option. Power lines already go to virtually every building, and by using them instead of laying new cable, BPL can extend broadband into areas that are not served by the other technologies.
